Roanoke Parks and Recreation Promotes Fitness with the 100 Miler Challenge

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – By the second Friday in January, many people start to struggle with their New Year’s resolutions. This day, known as Quitters Day, marks the point when fitness goals often slip away.

But in Roanoke, a new initiative is encouraging residents to stay on track. The city’s Parks and Recreation department launched its 100 Miler Challenge on Monday, kicking off the event with a mile walk.

More than 50 participants joined the walk from Fishburn Mansion to the greenway, staying active despite the colder weather.

“If it were easy, everyone would be doing it,” said Jen Prince, Community Recreation Supervisor. “In spring, it’s easier to get outside and stay active, but winter is different. This challenge helps build a supportive community, pushing people to exercise year-round, not just in the warmer months.”

The goal of the 100 Miler Challenge is simple: walk, run, hike, or bike one mile each day for 100 days. For those who need a different approach, the challenge also allows 30 minutes of physical activity – such as yoga or golfing – to substitute for the daily mile.
