Exercise Physiologist Analyzes Man’s 25-Pound Weight Loss on Steak and Eggs Diet

A Reddit user recently shared his experience of following a strict steak and eggs diet for a month, combined with daily 19-hour fasts. The post, shared in the /WorkoutRoutines subreddit, detailed the user’s motivations, the results, and the pros and cons of adhering to such a restrictive eating plan.

The user, who took on the 30-day challenge, ate two meals a day consisting of one 12-ounce sirloin steak and four whole eggs. He followed strict guidelines, avoiding snacks, dairy, and vegetables. His beverage options were limited to water and black coffee, and he used only salt and pepper for seasoning. This diet aligns with principles seen in carnivore and keto diets, which have gained popularity for promoting rapid fat loss and reduced inflammation. Some proponents believe these diets simplify nutrition by eliminating processed foods and potential irritants.

At the end of the 30 days, the user reported a loss of 25 pounds, along with increased energy, improved mental clarity, and enhanced strength during workouts. Despite the weight loss, Dr. Chris Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., owner of Mohr Results, pointed out that the key factor behind the results was likely a significant calorie reduction. Mohr estimated that the user’s daily intake was around 1,600 calories—an extremely low amount for a man weighing around 200 pounds, the average weight for American males. Additionally, Mohr emphasized that the diet lacked vital nutrients, including fiber and those found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

“It’s not surprising that his weight decreased given the extreme calorie reduction. But such a restrictive diet is not necessary or healthy for the long term,” Mohr stated.

The Reddit user mentioned that the diet was easy to follow and took the stress out of meal planning. However, he noted that it became repetitive and made social eating difficult. He clarified that he wouldn’t maintain this diet forever but saw it as a tool for weight loss, improved energy, and developing discipline.

Dr. Mohr concluded, “Nutrition and food should be celebrated, not seen as a challenge or something meant to ‘toughen you up.’”
