The sports and fitness centres being developed in Anna Nagar will adhere to international standards, according to senior officials from the city corporation. The authorities addressed public concerns about the facilities that will be available.
Both centres are expected to be completed within the year. The sports centre will include a badminton court, a shuttle court, and areas dedicated to indoor games like chess and carrom. While the swimming pool won’t be Olympic-sized due to space limitations, it will still be available for use. The centre will also feature a kitchen and dining area. “All these facilities will be developed to meet international standards,” said a senior corporation official.
The fitness centre will house a fully equipped gym built to global specifications. The city corporation has allocated Rs 5.75 crore for the sports centre and Rs 3.56 crore for the fitness centre.
However, some residents have raised concerns about the decision to develop the centres as separate projects. “Why not combine the gym with the sports centre? A single facility would be more convenient,” said K Deepan, a college student and athlete. In response, a corporation engineer explained, “We considered factors like foot traffic and future growth when planning these as separate projects. Both centres are expected to become central hubs for aspiring athletes. If needed, we will make adjustments once the centres are up and running.”
