Advocacy Group Organizes Fitness Program for Black Girls

The Delaware chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW) recently launched a fitness program aimed at Black girls in the state, focusing on increasing physical activity and promoting wellness.

Sherese Brewington-Carr, the chairperson of strategic partnerships at NCBW, emphasized that many Black girls in Delaware are concerned about their fitness levels and are eager to get more active. The program is part of the NCBW’s broader Black Girls Move initiative.

In collaboration with Orangetheory Fitness, a woman-owned business, the NCBW organized a series of full-body workout sessions every Saturday throughout February. These sessions aim to provide Black girls with a comprehensive fitness experience and valuable wellness education.

Brewington-Carr highlighted the importance of introducing healthy habits at an early age. “By understanding what our bodies need, focusing on nutrition, and building good habits, we can create routines that support long-term health,” she said.

The NCBW partnered with Orangetheory because of the program’s personalized approach. Brewington-Carr noted that it offers a full-body workout that can be tailored to each individual’s needs, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

The fitness sessions also provided valuable lessons on hydration, sleep, and nutrition. Participants used heart rate monitors to track their progress throughout the program.

Brewington-Carr hopes to bring similar programs to the community in the future. In the meantime, NCBW continues to organize free community walks and other wellness events for local residents.
