Claire Sweeney Ditches Diets and Embraces Mindfulness After Her Weight Loss

Actress Claire Sweeney, best known for her role as Cassandra Plummer on Coronation Street, has opened up about her new approach to health and wellness following a major weight loss of four stone. At 53, Sweeney reflects on how her perspective on diet and fitness has evolved over the years, moving from traditional New Year’s resolutions and strict dieting to embracing mindfulness and holistic well-being.

In the past, Sweeney would set New Year’s goals to hit the gym or begin restrictive diets. However, a life-changing experience on Dancing on Ice marked a turning point. Training alongside skater Colin Grafton, the intense physical regimen not only helped her shed the pounds but also led her to focus on overall wellness instead of just dieting.

“I looked back at my time hosting 60 Minute Makeover and realized how great my body was back then,” Sweeney said. “That was my goal—to look like that again. I had two pictures on my phone: one of me heavier, and one of my ideal body.” This insight highlights her shift from external goals to self-acceptance.

In an interview with Best magazine, Sweeney shared how her recent travels over the Christmas season sparked a change in her mindset. She recalled watching a documentary featuring Joan Plowright, who expressed regret for not discovering mindfulness earlier in life. “It really resonated with me,” Sweeney said. Inspired by this, she began her days with morning beach walks and listening to The Mel Robbins Podcast, learning about mindfulness and meditation.

Looking ahead, Sweeney’s goal for 2025 is to prioritize mindfulness and live in the present. Rather than stressing over strict gym routines, she plans to focus on maintaining her health and strength as she ages. She explained, “I do a little bit of everything in the gym, but the most important thing is to enjoy it and stay flexible.”

Sweeney has also been open about the weight gain she experienced during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Known for her love of food, she expressed a desire to feel fitter and stronger. On social media, she wrote, “I love being curvy, but I want to feel fitter, stronger, and shedding a little bit of timber wouldn’t hurt.” Her candidness about body image resonates with many of her followers who have experienced similar struggles.

Sweeney, who first gained fame on the soap Brookside, has since appeared on numerous television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity Big Brother, and Holby City. Her versatility and charm have earned her a loyal fan base.

In 2023, she returned to Coronation Street in the role of Cassandra Plummer. Fans can catch Claire Sweeney on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh on Sunday, March 16, 2025, where she will join fellow guests like actor Samantha Bond and theatre legend Sir Tim Rice. The episode will also feature young alpacas, spring lawn care tips from Chris Hull, and beer recommendations from Jaega Wise.

Sweeney’s shift towards mindfulness reflects a growing trend among individuals who seek mental wellness and balance over traditional dieting. By prioritizing both mental and physical health, Claire Sweeney sets a positive example for her fans and peers. Her journey is not just about weight loss but about nurturing overall well-being at every stage of life.
