UK Regulator Warns Against Buying Prescription-Only Weight-Loss Medications

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is warning the public against purchasing weight-loss medicines without a prescription from healthcare professionals.

As the New Year begins, people are cautioned not to buy such medicines from beauty salons or social media platforms, as this poses serious health risks and is illegal.

Andy Morling, Deputy Director of Criminal Enforcement at the MHRA, stressed the dangers of unregulated weight-loss treatments. “At this time of year, many people look for quick weight loss solutions. However, weight-loss medicines offered without a prescription are not just cosmetic treatments—they are powerful drugs that can only be legally prescribed by a healthcare professional,” he said.

The MHRA’s Criminal Enforcement Unit works closely with social media platforms and technology companies to combat the illegal sale of weight-loss medicines online. Efforts include removing posts and suspending accounts that promote the sale of such medicines without a prescription.

Dr. Alison Cave, Chief Safety Officer at the MHRA, highlighted the importance of consulting healthcare professionals before starting any treatment. “The decision to begin, continue, or stop treatments should be made together with a healthcare provider, after a full discussion of the benefits and risks,” she explained.

The MHRA monitors the safety of licensed weight-loss medicines, specifically GLP-1 Receptor Agonists, and encourages the public to report any side effects through the Yellow Card scheme. Dr. Cave also reminded patients to carefully read the patient information leaflet for each medicine, as all medications carry the potential for side effects.

Morling also warned against fraudulent online pharmacies, noting, “Criminals often make their websites appear legitimate. Always verify that online pharmacies are registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.”

The MHRA remains committed to ensuring that medicines are safe and effective. This New Year, the public is urged to only purchase weight-loss medicines from trusted, legitimate sources.
