The National Academy of Sports Medicine® (NASM), a global leader in fitness and wellness training, has launched a new course titled “Understanding Weight Loss Medications: A Guide for Fitness and Wellness Professionals.” This course aims to provide fitness experts with the knowledge needed to guide clients who are using medications like glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) in their weight loss journey.
GLP-1 and GIP medications have gained popularity as a treatment for obesity, both for individuals with and without type 2 diabetes. Recent studies show that 8-12% of U.S. adults have used a GLP-1 medication, with 6% still taking it, indicating the growing role of these drugs in healthcare.
“We see that more people, including those who exercise regularly, are using GLP-1/GIP medications,” said Mike Fantigrassi, Head of Product at NASM. “It’s crucial that fitness professionals understand how these drugs interact with exercise to provide the best support for their clients. Our new course ensures professionals are well-equipped to offer tailored exercise plans and help clients stay safe on their path to better health.”
The course covers the latest information on GLP-1 and GIP medications, including approved drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide, as well as those in clinical trials. Participants will learn about how these medications work, their potential side effects, and how they affect weight loss. The course also focuses on how fitness and wellness professionals can support clients taking these medications through exercise, nutrition, and behavior coaching.
Key course objectives include:
Identifying health risks linked to obesity
Comparing GLP-1 and GIP medications
Understanding the benefits and side effects of these medications
Offering comprehensive support for clients, including nutrition, exercise, and behavioral coaching
NASM’s new course provides fitness professionals with essential, evidence-based research and practical strategies to assist clients during medically assisted weight loss, supporting their overall health and well-being.
