Bali’s tourism scene is renowned for its stunning landscapes, from scenic cafes and natural vistas to surf spots and yoga retreats. Now, the Indonesian Ministry for Tourism has set its sights on making the island a global hub for both aesthetics and fitness tourism in the coming years.
Hariyatno, the Deputy for Destination and Infrastructure Development at the Ministry, spoke to the media about the vision for Bali’s future as a top destination for wellness. He emphasized the importance of improving the skills of service providers and raising quality standards. “One of the key steps is enhancing the competence of human resources and the quality of aesthetic-fitness services,” he said.
According to Hariyatno, Bali has immense potential to become a premium destination for aesthetic fitness. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to diversify wellness tourism offerings, including spas, ethno-spas, and beauty services. Bali’s wellness tourism is already evolving to include a variety of services, from healthy lifestyle activities to mental health support and spiritual healing.
The wellness and beauty market is massive, valued at USD 5.6 trillion globally, with Indonesia’s wellness tourism turnover currently at about USD 14 billion. Bali aims to boost this figure by capitalizing on its long-standing health and wellness traditions, deeply rooted in Balinese Hinduism, known as Bali Maha Usadhi. Dr. Diah Permana Tirtawati, Co-Founder and Director of the Bali Wellness and Beauty Expo, shared that Bali’s traditional wellness practices have been passed down through generations to promote health and happiness.
The ministry’s vision also acknowledges the growing trend of aesthetic fitness, which focuses on physical activity for its aesthetic benefits rather than performance. Tourists visiting Bali can explore a range of yoga and pilates studios, gyms, and wellness facilities throughout the island.
Canggu, a popular area for health-focused travelers, offers a variety of options. ADDA Yoga, located on Jalan Kayu Manis, is a favorite among visitors, with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light and offer panoramic views of rice terraces. Pilates enthusiasts can also enjoy a thriving scene in Bali. Revive and Pilates Studio, with locations in Canggu and Umalas, offers more than 50 classes weekly, including Sweatformer, Mat Pilates, and Powerformer. For those seeking a more intense workout, Power + Revive in Canggu provides a full range of gym facilities, including a sun deck, sauna, ice bath, and jacuzzis.
With Bali’s plans to combine its aesthetic beauty with top-tier fitness experiences, the island is poised to become a leading destination for wellness tourism in the years ahead.
