An armed man was shot and killed by police in Londonderry, New Hampshire, after allegedly firing a gunshot at a Planet Fitness and then fleeing the scene, according to the state’s Attorney General.
The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Planet Fitness on Orchard View Drive in Londonderry, when authorities received reports of a gunshot being fired.
The shooter, later identified as 23-year-old Calvin M. Ly-Bishop, drove away after the incident. Shortly after, police spotted his vehicle on Winding Pond Road and attempted to pull him over.
The Attorney General’s office reports that Ly-Bishop exited the car about half a mile from the gym, armed with a handgun. He exchanged gunfire with three Londonderry police officers, who then shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy conducted Thursday confirmed that Ly-Bishop died from gunshot wounds to the chest. The cause of death was ruled as homicide. The New Hampshire Attorney General clarified that homicide refers to the killing of one person by another.
The Planet Fitness gym remained closed on Thursday following the incident.
Nearby Businesses on Lockdown
Though no one was injured inside Planet Fitness, nearby businesses took precautions. Local establishments, unsure of the situation, locked their doors.
Jasmyn Johnson, who works at CKO Kickboxing next door, expressed concern. “It’s definitely scary to think about because it could have been us,” she said. “Some Planet Fitness members walked by and told us that someone had a gun inside and it was serious.”
Conner Gentiloumo, also with CKO Kickboxing, added, “I locked the door during class just to be safe. We were just trying to take all the precautions and make sure everyone is OK.”
Londonderry Residents Affected
Londonderry Police issued a reverse 911 call and text to local residents, alerting them to the ongoing investigation. They also closed off Winding Pond Road, which is the only route in and out of the area, leaving many neighbors stranded.
“I live in the village behind Shaw’s, and they’ve shut down the whole area so I can’t even get home right now,” said local resident Melissa Jefferies. “They won’t even let me walk home.”
Residents were advised to remain patient as investigators processed the scene. Police stated the road would remain closed unless there was an emergency.
Planet Fitness Responds
In a statement to WBZ, Planet Fitness reassured the public that no injuries occurred inside the gym. “At Planet Fitness, the safety of our team members and members is our top priority,” the statement read. “We can confirm that there were no injuries inside the club, and we are working with police as they continue their investigation.”
