Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest player in NHL history, is currently involved in a legal dispute over claims related to a controversial weight loss product. The legendary hockey star is suing his former business partner, Veera Mahajan, for malicious prosecution. This follows a lawsuit Mahajan filed against Gretzky in 2022, accusing him of promoting a weight loss gum called “OMG” with false claims.
Mahajan, one of the investors in the product, initially blamed Gretzky for making exaggerated claims about losing 35 pounds using the gum, which she argues led to the company’s eventual collapse. She also claimed that Gretzky later admitted to fabricating the weight loss story, which she believes was a key factor in the product’s failure. Mahajan filed a lawsuit seeking damages but later moved to have the case dismissed.
However, Gretzky is now fighting back. According to The New York Post, he is suing Mahajan in Los Angeles County, accusing her of bringing the case in an attempt to pressure him into paying a costly settlement. Gretzky denies the allegations and claims Mahajan was trying to extract millions from him to avoid negative publicity. While his lawsuit does not specify an exact amount in damages, it seeks to hold Mahajan accountable for what he sees as a baseless attack on his reputation.
This legal battle is only one part of Gretzky’s ongoing disputes related to the product. Steven Sparks, the founder of OMG, has also filed a lawsuit against the hockey icon, alleging similar misconduct. That case is still pending, meaning Gretzky could be tied up in court for months or even years.
Despite the ongoing legal drama, Gretzky’s legacy in the NHL remains untarnished. He still holds the records for most career goals, assists, and points. His all-time goal record of 894 is under threat, however, as Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is less than 10 goals away from matching it. This has only added to the intrigue surrounding one of hockey’s most iconic milestones.
