Fake Weight Loss Injections Arriving in Northern Ireland ‘Wrapped in Kitchen Roll’

by Lana Green

An investigation has revealed that weight loss injections ordered online and delivered to Northern Ireland arrived in unsafe conditions, wrapped in kitchen roll with no labels or instructions. The injections, which were bought through social media platforms, were found to be unhygienic and potentially dangerous.

BBC News NI conducted test purchases from a Facebook seller based in England, who claimed the syringes contained semaglutide, a prescription-only drug used for weight loss. However, upon arrival in Northern Ireland, the syringes were tested by a professor from Queen’s University. The results showed that the syringes did not contain semaglutide, but instead contained carnitine, a common supplement available in stores.

In response, the Department of Health (DoH) stated it is taking strong action against the illegal promotion, sale, and misuse of medicines in Northern Ireland. The department is especially concerned about the misuse of medications like semaglutide, which are meant to treat type 2 diabetes and assist with weight management alongside proper diet and exercise.

A DoH spokesperson emphasized that the department remains vigilant in monitoring the illicit online market for dangerous and unregulated products.
