Two fitness instructors from Caversham have been recognised for their efforts in building a welcoming space where women can grow stronger and more confident through weightlifting.
Natalie Higley and Nicky Stevens, who previously worked in beauty and finance, founded the Strong Women’s Club after connecting during a kettlebell class in 2018. Their business recently won the Fitness and Sport category at the Small Business Awards.
Higley and Stevens said the idea came from a gap they noticed when they first began lifting weights themselves. They heard many women describe the gym’s weights section as intimidating and unwelcoming, so they decided to create a space where women could feel safe and supported.
“The Strong Women’s Club is a community of women who are pushing boundaries at a certain stage in life,” said Ms Higley. “These women are no longer punishing their bodies with extreme diets and over-exercising. Instead, they’re choosing to celebrate what their bodies can do and focus on nourishing themselves.”
She added, “We wanted a place where women could feel supported, safe, and just have a really good laugh. Our classes are brilliant—the time really flies.”
Ms Stevens echoed this message, saying their mission is to change how women experience the gym.
“As women age, lifting weights becomes even more important,” she said. “Research shows it’s essential for bone health, muscle maintenance, and even building more strength. It’s crucial for long-term health.”
She also acknowledged that starting out can feel daunting. “A lot of women don’t know where to begin, and there’s so much conflicting advice out there. It can be overwhelming,” she said. “We’re here to guide them through it all. We’ll hold their hand and help them gain confidence as they go.”
